so, some of you may know I have a lovely six-year-old male whippet called Kip.
He's never been the smartest dog around (we love him all the same), and often comes inside with scratches and such. Never too serious, though.
Earlier this evening, I was upstairs on my computer when I heard my sister shout for my mom. I don't remember exactly what she said, but I know it had 'blood' and 'Kip'.
So I quickly shut off the computer, abandoned whatever I was doing, and ran downstairs. Sure enough, my sister was standing there with a bloody Kip beside her.
His entire back, legs, flanks, and part of his muzzle were splattered with blood. But worst was his tail. Near the tip of his tail, a five-inch gash spread across, missing chunks of fur around it and cut nearly down to the muscle.
We washed him off, avoiding the tail for now, and it was a relief to find that most of the splattered blood wasn't from any cuts -- it was most likely either from his tail lashing around or from the animal that attacked him.
The poor dog was shaking the entire time we cleaned him, and afterwards we went to search the house for any signs of blood. There were a few droplets here and there, but the worst thing we found was about a square-foot section of a wall near his doggie-door covered with blood. Otherwise, we strangely didn't find any blood on or around his doggie-door, or even in the backyard.
It was about 10pm at this time and we didn't think it was way too serious enough to take him to emergency pet hospital, so we wrapped up his tail in some gauze and stayed with him for a bit.
When we all were going to sleep, we decided to lock Kip in the kitchen with his dog-bed and food/water. We knew he wouldn't go to bed easily since he adores my mother and never sleeps away from her, but we had to try.
Just five minutes later, I heard the pitter-pattering of his feet and found that he had easily ripped off the bandage and jumped over the gate. His tail was freshly bleeding, the wound seemingly even longer than before.
For now, we've locked him in his crate (which he certainly can't get out of) without a bandage, since he could just rip it off again. It's going to be a hard night for the boy, but he'll just have to wait till morning when we'll bring him in to the vet.
What we think happened (we don't know for sure though) is that Kip was attacked by a fox. We have a fox that has lived around the house for years, and every night the dog goes out and barks for a few minutes, but they've never had any real contact. Why they picked now to fight, we don't know. It's even more puzzling why there was no blood or evidence of the fight outside. Luckily, the fox (if it was indeed him that Kip fought with) doesn't seem to be rabid, but we'll get Kip the shot anyways.
Send all good wishes to my dear Kip, we hope he'll do alright in the morning. I feel so bad for the poor thing, he's always been the sweetest, most timid dog and I can't bear to see him in pain. I guess we'll see what happens tomorrow.

UPDATE 7-24-11: We've just returned home from the vet's office, and Kip is doing fine. Luckily his wound isn't too serious, he got all the necessary shots for rabies (the fox that attacked him clearly doesn't have rabies, but just to make sure) and is now prescribed to antibiotics for a week. The fur around the wound on his tail was shaved and they wrapped it up in a pretty green bandage. Kip seems a lot happier that he's all cleaned up. <3
Thank you all who wished Kip and me good luck, it means a lot <3 Just a few days and my lovely whippet will be as good as new.~
UPDATE 7-27-11: Today we took Kip back in to the vet's go get his bandage cut off and his wound inspected. My mother used to work with the vet, Dr. Koch, so he's very friendly and loose. He called us back to the room where they do 'vet stuff', and took us to where Kip was. His tail was looking very, very thin (literally the thickness of a rats tail) and the area where the gash was wasn't looking good. It's shriveled up and bloody, and no fur is growing back on it even though there is fur growing on the rest of his tail. Dr. Koch put a new bandage on it and said he'd take a look on it Friday, but said that there is about a 25% chance Kip will lose that part of his tail.
Hopefully the wound will start to heal more, but we can't be sure. We'll see on Friday I guess D:
